Job Description & Qualifications

Job Title: Respite Provider

Purpose of Position: This position provides all the care required to a child (or children) with severe emotional or intellectual diagnosis. The purpose of respite care is to give the parent or primary caregiver a break from the daily responsibilities of caring for someone with a severe emotional or intellectual diagnosis.

Reports to: Service Supervisor

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high quality of supervision and a safe environment for consumer(s) during their daily activities.
  • Assist consumer(s) in completing daily tasks, as needed.
  • Communicate safety concerns and incidents to Service Supervisor, consumer's guardian(s), and others as needed.
  • Accurately document activities during respite shifts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Have a telephone, land or cell, with an answering machine or voicemail.
  • Must have the ability to complete all documentation of services to meet Medicaid and agency requirements.
  • Ability to meet all deadlines as required by this agency.
  • Must be able to track hours worked to not exceed approved amounts.
  • Must complete Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting training, as required by the Department of Human Services.
  • Must have a passion for providing excellent care to others.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and high level of professionalism.
  • Must be able to meet the physical and emotional demands of the consumer, which can include lifting, running, and de-escalating emotional situations. Such requirements are different for each consumer. Limits in this area will also limit the amount of work available.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year or greater experience with children with severe emotional disturbances.
  • Education beyond high school in a human service or education-related field.
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have access to a reliable vehicle.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to lift to support physical needs of the consumer.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
